Book Review for Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
Release date: May 1, 2011
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Pages: 396

Summary: The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought it was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in the state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their air plane had another idea and crashed on a dessert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, water and practically no eyeliner.
What's a beauty queen to do? Continue to practise for the talent portion of the program or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

Thoughts: The first thing I thought of when I even just saw the cover was, this is a must read. It looks like a fun and hilarious novel. I mean, look at this cover, a girl in a blue poka-dotted bikini with a beauty queens sash on and a thing that is supposed to be loaded with bullets but is loaded with bright read lipstick. Does that alone not tell you something about this book. Well, if you haven't read Beauty Queens,(gasp),go pick it up now because you will be in for a wild ride!
Libba Bray makes this book so fun and adds just the perfect amount of everything, some comedy, romance and lots and lots of DRAMA. What do you expect from teenage beauty pageant girls? Anyway, one really fun thing in Beauty Queens is how Libba Bray incorporated into the book, commercial breaks and news updates! Seriously, I'm not joking. It was so fun and made this book even more unique and original.
At points in this book I thought the girls were being really dump and thinking, wow; how will they ever survive? They all have really fun and sassy attitudes which makes the character's very quirky and lovable which is one of the many things that Libba Bray did fantastic in this book.
My only problem with this book is that I found it a bit slow at the beginning and I know some people who have put this book down because of it but other than the slow beginning, once you pass that stage, it is full on Beauty Queens!
Beauty Queens was a really good, stand alone novel. It is a fun summer read but can be read any time. If you haven't read Beauty Queens yet, I strongly advise you to go and get a copy. I would give Beauty Queens by Libba Bray a 4/5 stars because it was a very good novel and there were just some glitches here and there for me but other then that, it is a very well done book.

Rating: 4/5 stars
Recommended to people who like: Drama, Comedy, Beauty Queens, Competition, Romance and Sassy attitudes
